The Upstate Artists Guild is a not-for-profit volunteer organization, open to all, which promotes the appreciation, practice, and enjoyment of art. Our mission is to promote art education and artistic endeavors throughout the community; to maintain a space in which to meet for the purpose of exhibitions, lectures, and instruction; and to work with the community to stimulate an interest in the arts.

On March 11th, the city of Troy shut down an ongoing art exhibit at the The Sanctuary for Independent Media, suspending use of the building until cited code violations are addressed. This comes "less than 24 hours after an inspection by code enforcement and fire officials cleared the building for use." This also comes less than one day after the re-opening of an interactive piece entitled "Virtual Jihadi" by Iraqi-born U.S. citizen Wafaa Bilal.
The UAG is both dumbfounded and outraged by the scare tactics we've observed being used against a fellow grassroots arts organization and gallery. You can read our official response here.

+ UAG Fundraiser a Great Success

Thanks to all of our members who donated artwork, all the attendees who showed their support for the UAG, and Envy Lounge, COSMOs and PINTs, and Cirque de la Nocturne for creating such a fun event. Many pieces were auctioned for more than their stated value, and there were quite a few "steals" as well -- best of all more than forty pieces of amazing art found new homes, with the proceeds going to the UAG. You can find pictures of the event here.

The UAG is pleased to announce some very exciting recurring events for the new year. The Albany Sonic Arts Collective will be presenting a monthly event at the UAG gallery, continuing their success from previous events (here and here). We've also teamed up with Albany Poets and Jawbone to present Poetry at the UAG, with readings from local poets every second and fourth Friday of the month. A full schedule will be posted soon.
We're also excited about our upcoming silent art auction to benefit the UAG, hosted by Envy Lounge on February 28th. You can find more information on the event and how to get involved or donate artwork here.
Beginning in March the UAG will be bringing a new event to After 1st Fridays entitled 1st Friday Films, for which we have an open call for submissions. We've also got a slew of classes and workshops planned which you can find more information on here.
We look forward to seeing you at the gallery soon!

Thanks to everyone who made it out on Friday for an amazing night. We were able to raise more than $1100 for 1st Friday, while still finding time to have fun enjoying the music and other festivities. We've also posted our pictures from the event. Thanks again for coming out and showing your support!
