I think it?s fair to say that many people have copied a famous painting or have created artwork in the style of a famous artist at some point in their lives. Whether this was prompted by a high school art class or came out of personal inspiration, emulation is not only a form of flattery; it is a great learning tool as well. Hanging in my bedroom is a gorgeous imitation of Van Gogh?s Sunflowers that my friend created with oil pastels in high school. I, too, have tried my hand at imitation. I once created a Georgia O?Keefe inspired drawing ? let?s just say my friend was much more successful in her endeavor. In any case, it is the pleasure and challenge of taking on such a venture that counts. Seeking inspiration from the Masters doesn?t mean that original artwork isn?t being generated; rather, it is a chance to interpret the artist?s work, hone one?s skills and pay homage to great artists.
UAG presents Under the Influence, a show of work influenced by other artists. Featured artist Wren Panzella.
