"The days grow longer, the cold grows stronger." So runs old folk wisdom. And so, in the dead of winter, we draw inwards, indoors gathered around the fire waiting for spring while outside, the world is sleeping. Deep sleep and deeper dreams - dreams of cold, dreams of returning sunlight, dreams of short days lengthening, dreams of Fenris the winter wolf who has devoured the sun to spit it up again like a damp hairball in the mud and rain of April.
For our forbearers, it was a time of handiwork art and craft, of stories long and tall, a time of warning tales and warming rituals, a time to consider our closeness to the raw teeth of nature and to confront death and to meet it with human creativity: The ability to re-imagine and reorder the universe - both spiritual and material - to suit both our survival and our fancy. In this spirit we present the works within.
The Upstate Artists Guild announces their first juried art show at their Lark St, Albany gallery. Dead of Winter follows the success of the UAG?s inaugural show at the space, SAL on LARK. Featuring the work of the St Rose Student Art League, that show?s opening attracted over 500 visitors to the small gallery space located at 247 Lark Street. The UAG hopes for an equally warm response as Dead of Winter opens Friday, February 10th with a reception from 5:00-8:00 PM. Refreshments coordinated by Crasis Event Design will be offered and the artists behind the work will be in attendance. The show will run throughout the month of February and gallery hours run Wednesday and Thursday 5:00-8:00 PM, Friday and Saturday 2:00-8:00 PM.
Dead of Winter explores the relationship between the short cold days of winter and the creative human spirit. For our forbearers, it was a time of handiwork, art and craft and story telling. A time to consider our closeness to the raw teeth of nature and to confront death and to meet it with human creativity: The ability to re-imagine and reorder the universe ? both spiritual and material ? to suit both our survival and our fancy.
The Upstate Artists Guild is a not-for-profit volunteer organization, open to all, which promotes the appreciation, practice and enjoyment of art. The Guild?s mission is to promote art education and artistic endeavors throughout the community; to help foster and sustain the burgeoning upstate art scene in Albany area and beyond; to maintain a space in which to meet for the purpose of exhibitions, lectures, and instruction; and to work with the community to stimulate an interest in the arts.
Located at 247 Lark Street Albany, New York, UAG meets regularly to plan and participate in area events and happenings, as well as to prepare their own art events. Building on the group's prior successes as Art4Central, the Guild has made a new home on Lark Street. The ten founding members from the Upstate New York area, with the help of a growing base of members, participate in and plan a variety of exhibits, seminars, and social events.
