UAG presents Paperworks, an exhibition of artwork using paper as media, with featured artist, Samuray Akarvardar, and side room artist, Luis Oyola.

Paper was first invented in China very early in the 2nd century. Since then, paper has skyrocketed to become one of the most useful tools humans have. Paper allows for the recording and easy transportation and communication of ideas, concepts, and of course, art. Before paper was invented, getting something recorded with a stone and chisel must have been a huge hassle. Today paper is used for just about everything. Art and paper go together like Bert and Ernie. Paper has texture and is tactile and intimate. It can be folded and cut and molded and sculpted. We wrap presents with it, blow our noses with it, and sometimes even eat our food off of it. The list is endless. Paper comes from plants, which makes it worth conserving and reusing. Technology has begun to replace paper, but because paper is so much fun we are now forcing our technology to be like paper. The Amazon Kindle is made and marketed to look like a real book while the Apple iPad can be touched, fondled, and drawn upon just like real paper. Coming down the pike soon will be electronic paper.

Artists have used paper for everything from rough concepts to final masterworks. We know its power and we often carry it everywhere just in case lightning strikes in some unlikely place way off the beaten path. Sometimes artists even make their own paper. Whatever we use it for we try not to take it for granted. We love it.

Now put on your paper hat, fold up your paper airplane, and don't forget your bag lunch. Get ready for ?Paperworks,? the UAG exhibition of artwork using paper as media.
