The People's Choice show is democracy in action. It strips away any and all preconceived notions we may have about art and puts the final vote in the hands of the people. We can train, study, work, flip out, settle down, and more, but at the end of the day our work must speak for itself and project or communicate to people in some way all on its own.
People know what they like. Such well-known favorites as Dali's The Persistence of Memory, Van Gogh's A Starry Night, and Gustav Klimpt's The Kiss all resonate with the mass populace and have become almost as solidified in our pop culture as Coca Cola. Then of course there is what is almost certainly the most well-known piece of art ever made, Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Almost everyone with a pulse would recognize that piece if shown it.
How do some pieces resonate so well with the public while others are just merely glanced at or ignored entirely? Perhaps it is some deep-rooted collective human psyche that certain artists tap directly into. When art that has been created from inspiration is taken from this collective source pool and then shown to the masses, they respond as if they have known and seen the piece before.
The People's Choice show brings together the art we make when we are alone. No theme, no rules, no restrictions — just the art we are compelled to make when left to our own devices. Cast your vote, submit your art, make your choice and let your freak flag fly. And remember, vote for my piece!
UAG presents People's Choice, with the Kid's People's Choice in the featured artist room and High School People's Choice in the side room.
